Pumpkins bigger than Volkswagens, the "Picasso of Pumpkin Carvers" and a sea of orange along the warming Half Moon Bay coastline define Half Moon Bay's annual ode to everything pumpkin, the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival. Every year, Half Moon Bay grows over 3,000 tons of pure pumpkin, the orangest member of the Cucurbita family of gourds and a uniquely American plant that first enchanted Europeans in 1528. Since 1971, Half Moon Bay's old-fashioned Pumpkin Festival has endeared thousands of Bay Area visitors and heralded the pumpkin harvest with a lively annual celebration. Bustling booths along Half Moon Bay's Main Street serve everything from pumpkin pie to pumpkin fudge, as well the homestyle bounty of California's coast. Part Dionysian festival, wines from Half Moon Bay and California flow freely and the arts and crafts atmosphere is one of a small-town celebration with a mass appeal. Highlights of the festive and family-friendly Pumpkin Festival include the pumpkin weigh-off (the average is 1,000 pounds), a Pumpkin Parade, an All-Hallows costume contest and a Haunted House rendered chilling by local actors. In addition, there's music on three stages and a children's stage with juggling, comedy and magic. Half Moon Bay Pumpkin PatchesFarmer John's Pumpkins Lemo's Family Farm |
