Sam's Chowder House
4210 N. Cabrillo Hwy. Half Moon Bay, CA 94019
Generally speaking, restaurants with great ocean views usually fall short in the food department. That's what makes Sam's Chowder House such a gem. Sure, it's got gorgeous views of the ocean and the picturesque Pillar Point Harbor, but it's the food that packs the place night after night. Sam's Chowder House appeals to locals and visitors alike with its great service, superbly fresh New England-style seafood and great cocktails. Don't miss the cioppino and lobster roll sandwiches or any of the fresh fish specials. Even the fish and chips shine here. And if there is better New England clam chowder on the West Coast, I haven't found it. Tres Amigos
200 N. Cabrillo Hwy. Half Moon Bay, CA 94019; Tel. +1.650.726.6080
There's really no debate. Tres Amigos is the place in Half Moon Bay for Mexican food. Tres Amigos, or just "Tres" as it's known by locals, serves a reliable menu of taqueria standards like tacos (soft shell, of course) big tortas and eminently satisfying, hulking burritos. While some say the remodeled restaurant lacks the character of the old place, there's still a line out the door as tourists and locals alike grab a bite to or from the beach.
